The Portuguese institution Fundação Champalimaud is the Portuguese Personality of the year 2010, according to the Foreign Press Association in Portugal (AEIP). Further to the scientific and architectural recognition of the construction of the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown, the institution has almost unanimously won the award “because it has contributed to a larger promotion of Portugal in the whole world”, said Adriana Niemeyer, Chairman of AIEP. The Research Centre was built by Mota-Engil Engenharia, in consortium, in less than 730 days, and was inaugurated in October 5, 2010. The investment reached 100 million euros and it aims to be one of the most advanced scientific laboratories in the whole world, as well as a home for about 400 scientists who will work on two fields of research: cancer and neuroscience. The “Personality of the Year” Award is chosen every year by a jury composed of more than 55 journalists from the most important foreign media represented in Portugal.
