Dear readers,

As everyone knows, the broadcast of the most important news of MOTA-ENGIL ENGENHARIA is done through several means of internal dissemination: SINERGIA magazine, ON.ME portal, CORPORATE TV and Mota-Engil Engenharia’s NEWSLETTER.

Although the degrees of penetration and the contents of such means are not homogeneous, a more restrained management of our resources justifies the gather of the dissemination function, so the issue of the NEWSLETTER is now suspended.

For their cooperation in these 73 issues, we’d like to thank the team of Communication and Image, the writers of the articles, coming from multiple areas, branches and affiliates in the several markets where MOTA-ENGIL ENGENHARIA is present, and also all those who have contributed for the continuous improvement of the NEWSLETTER, which was evident over time.

We’d encourage sustained efforts, now focused in enhancing the content of the other 3 means of dissemination.

MOTA-ENGIL, GOOD MORNING!

1 September 2011 No Comment

… or good afternoon! This is how Mota-Engil receptionists answer every day the many phone calls at the offices of Porto and Linda-a-Velha, or Porto Alto site. We are talking about Fátima Rocha and Maria João, Beatriz Simões, and Cândida Esteves, respectively. Beyond the tasks of assisting the public, by telephone and personally, they have in common cheerful mood, friendliness and professionalism. Get to know more about their career path and memories in the company.
According to Fátima Rocha (63 years old), or Dona Fátima as most people know her, there is no other job to which she could identify herself as the one she performs at Mota-Engil for 22 years. “I’ve always liked this task and never thought about another. I fell in love with my work at Quinta da China and then with the people that I still see here in Rego Lameiro”, she says.
The many people she knows, personally or by telephone, is one of the most rewarding features that she highlights in her job, as well as the ability to recognize most of them through their voice, “because we can spend years without talking to this person but the voice has an advantage: it doesn’t age while everything else about us changes! ”
Maria João (46 years old), also in the company for 22 years, recalls her first steps in her career at Mota-Engil: “I started at Varandas do Douro, and then I went to the Rego Lameiro building. There were very few people, but then we grew and grew and today we are what we can see. ”
Among situations that still surprise her, she points out those when she finally knows a person to whom she spoke many times by phone and finds out that the image designed in her mind was fully different from reality. “With the creation of the portal on.me some of these cases were suppressed, but it still happens yet”, she says, amused.
Interestingly, Beatriz Simões (43 years old) is also working at Mota-Engil for 22 years, now at Linda-a-Velha office. She began her career at the A-da-Beja site and later at Porto Alto site (aka EPA in Portugal). She’s fully satisfied about having changed from Porto Alto (EPA site) to Linda-a-Velha, almost three years ago.
“As soon as I learned of the vacancy for Linda-a-Velha, I applied for the job and sometimes I think that it is still a dream to have had this opportunity. I do what I love,” she says, remembering with a natural smile the astonishment of a few employees when they saw her in the new workplace, since they did not know of that change.
In the meantime, Cândida Esteves (39 years old) stands at the reception of Porto Alto site (EPA) for almost three years, and although she works on outsourcing arrangements for Mota-Engil, she states being as much devoted as the above-mentioned colleagues.
“The EPA is a very busy place, so boredom is not part of my reality, quite the reverse. I am fortunate to work in a great simplicity environment and to deal with several people“, says Cândida when summing up her day-to-day work.
Despite having different ages, personalities and lives, Fátima, Maria, Beatriz and Cândida share the taste for the job they perform every day, with a smile!

PORTUGAL: LABC provides training to analysts through e-learning

1 September 2011 No Comment

Over the last few years, the Central Laboratory (LABC) has promoted the implementation of professional development strategies for Laboratory Analysts of Mota-Engil Engenharia. E-learning is a major part of these courses and sets out to facilitate and accelerate learning, contributing to the career development process of the laboratory analyst. This strategy started in the scope of the Link.ME project with the creation and testing of two prototype modules. To date, the LABC team has developed 10 e-learning modules, available for use on on.me portal, allowing analysts, at this early stage, to develop skills in performing laboratory tests on soils, aggregates and concrete. In a context of continuous evolution of standards and legal requirements, the e-learning dynamic provides speed to the process of learning and skills certification of the Laboratory Analysts in order to perform laboratory tests and in situ. The system allows each analyst to perform, at workplace, the theoretical training through appealing compelling multimedia content and supporting documentation. When this part is completed successfully, it provides access to the practical training, which is supervised by a Lead Analyst, who finally allows the analyst to obtain the Certificate of Testing Competence. Learning content and the implemented multimedia dynamic are made exclusively with LABC internal skills and know-how, and have the valuable support of elements from the Technology Department. The benefits of implementing this training methodology at Mota-Engil Engenharia are clear and ensure skills upgrading and continuous learning process for a Laboratory Analyst at very low cost. In this stage, the modules will be available only for the Portuguese market. In the short/medium term, it is expected to extend this solution for other geographic areas where the company operates, with the presence of laboratory analysts.

Being 77 years old (yes, 77!), of which 42 years were spent working in the company, Mrs Isaura brings us biscuits, tea and coffee every day in organised serving carts, but she also provides support to meetings and training, saying that “there’s no shortage of work”.

In a recent interview with Corporate TV, she stated that she loves her job and that, as long as she would be allowed to, she would be very pleased to go on with her tasks, because “I feel good in my pace and I am still full of pep.” However, life is full of surprises and the time has come to finally enjoy her retirement.

She will take along intense memories with her, including the years in which she was considered Miss Friendliness (three times), when she won the second prize of fado singer or when she performed with artists in a fado house after a dinner. There are many good things lived within the company, but it is the many people met there, and with whom she interacted for a long or short time, that she will carry in her heart.

Mrs Isaura, just a few words that are probably common to the employees of Linda-a-Velha: Thank you so much! Not only for the care of what you brought in the serving carts, but also for your smile in the morning, for your concern and for the brief chat that we all had with you. Kisses from all of us and we hope that life will still give you many joyful moments.

MOTA-ENGIL 65th ANNIVERSARY: WE ARE WHAT WE DO AND WE WILL MAKE IT

30 June 2011 No Comment

These words belong to Ismael Gaspar, Chairman of Mota-Engil Engenharia e Construção, who follows the motto of the Group in order to share a message of strength, appropriate for the way we should prepare to face the serious crisis plaguing the whole Europe, but also for marking the 65th anniversary of the brand Mota-Engil, celebrated on the 29th of this month.

Portugal stands in a deep crisis and the consequences on the construction sector have reached a worrying level and will get even worse. The construction sector is confronted with the drastic reduction of public and private investment over the coming years and the deadlock of the financial system. Against this gloomy background, Ismael Gaspar says that the construction sector will have to be resized and the companies must inevitably be adapted to the new market reality in Portugal.

“The near future will bring instability and volatility in the domestic market. Therefore, we need to be attentive and, in the case of Mota-Engil Engenharia, the strategy is the unequivocal enhancement of internationalisation,” said the Chairman who refuses to stand still. He warn us that our company needs to adapt its organisation to the new reality imposed by a lower supply of the market in Portugal. “For these reasons, we will have to be very determined to readjust our internal structure in a wise and motivating way, so as to ensure the sustainability and profitability, as well as looking for new markets. We are present in many markets, but we need to invest more in the most profitable ones. ”

Regarding the role of the company in the Group’s development, there is no doubt: besides being the main business area, the Engineering and Construction activity is linked to the success of the Group.

“The history we have by now and that we may contact and see today, either through the book and the film, both named Building a Life, or through the Manuel António da Mota Foundation, recently constituted, can give us a dimension of the importance that the company had, has and will continue to have within the Group. From its founder, we acquired values, we assimilated a culture, but above all the passion and the definite way he had for facing the difficulties and transforming them into opportunities. We are going through a conjuncture in which the company has to surpass itself, since the path is made by walking and the vision and entrepreneurship of Manuel António da Mota guide us. ”

The Chairman, who holds his office with great pride, shares his vision with us: “Today and in the next 65 years, the construction will remain a core business area in the development of our brand. It will have a key role in the Group’s sustainability, which means a huge challenge for young and less young people who will be requested for more availability regarding geographical mobility. ”

Contrary to what it may seem, these are not harsh words, in any way. Before any value judgment, it is an essential reality in order to ensure the status and evolution of our Company. “We have to face the current context and consider it as an opportunity to support and consolidate the perpetuity of the construction area and of the Group itself. After all, We Are what We Do and We will Win this huge challenge! “

PORTUGAL: Ambiente_Douro Interior selects mushrooms for the start of an initiative

30 June 2011 No Comment

Mushrooms were the topic selected by the Ambiente_Douro Interior to start, in May, a set of thematic disclosures under the scope of the International Year of Forests 2011. The initiative intended to increase awareness of these simple structure fungi, having no roots, leaves or flowers, which play a balancing role in our ecosystem. Mushrooms are useful for the roots of the trees, as they decompose organic matter from dead organisms, promoting the recycling of nutrients into the soil. We may find them in many types of habitats, but the forest is the place where we find them more often and with diversity. Given their importance, and in order to preserve them for more years, the essential techniques for a sustainable harvest are picking them carefully from their base when they reach maturity and carrying them in baskets. Do not pick up very mature or rotten mushrooms, or any other that give rise to concerns in their identification, and do not destroy inedible species: these are other imperative rules for the conservation of these fungi.

ANGOLA: Kianda Bridge inaugurated and open to the public

15 June 2011 No Comment

It is part of the rehabilitation works of the Bay of Luanda and it was inaugurated and opened to the public on May 27. The Kianda Bridge is a road infrastructure that connects the shore of Luanda to the Cape Island and to Dr. Agostinho Neto Avenue. The President José Eduardo dos Santos and Ana Paula dos Santos, the First Lady, were present at the ceremony and travelled by car over the bridge. Several members of the Government of Angola and members of the Parliament were also present, as well as António Mota, chairman of the Board of Directors of Mota-Engil Group. The bridge was built in eight months by a consortium formed by Mota-Engil Engenharia and Soares da Costa and is regarded as a complex piece of engineering, given the sandy nature of the land, which meant that the foundations had reached 22 m depth because only then solid ground was found. These works were expected to cost 136 million dollars (about 94.4 million euros) and the infrastructure, with six lanes, three in each direction, is formed by two independent and prestressed half-platforms with an average height of 7 m. The construction method was shoring to the ground, with the three abutments and the 21 pillars of the platform based on indirect foundations, for a total of about 2328 m of 800 mm piles. The channel is about 40 m long and 17 m wide and it was developed through the execution of two pile walls, with 600 mm diameter secant piles, which will provide a connection between the Bay of Luanda and the Bay of Chicala. It should be noted that the rehabilitation of the Bay of Luanda started a year ago and is scheduled to be inaugurated in mid-2012.

Mota-Engil has started geological surveys for the construction of the bridge Maputo/Catembe, in Mozambique

15 June 2011 No Comment

“In order to define the conditions of the area where the 3000m-long bridge will be constructed for connecting the city of Maputo and the municipality of Catembe, geological surveys have started this week, according to the newspaper Notícias de Maputo. These surveys are being carried out by the Portuguese construction company Mota-Engil and aims at evaluating, along the route of the future bridge, the land surface through the soil behaviour so as to prevent possible natural disasters, such as erosion, landslides, soil settlement, soil swelling and earthquakes. During a working visit to Catembe, the chairman of Maputo Council, David Simango, said it seems that the construction of the bridge should start in January 2012. (…) The construction of the bridge for Catembe and new roads, a project estimated at 500 million dollars, should be financed by the Mozambican Investment Bank (Banco Nacional de Investimentos), an institution in which the Mozambican government and the Portuguese state-owned financial group Caixa Geral de Depósitos have equal stakes of 49.5 percent, while the Commercial and Investment Bank (Banco Comercial e de Investimentos) owns 1 percent. ”

Mota-Engil invests in hydropower in Angola

15 June 2011 No Comment

Mota-Engil includes energy in the list of priority investments within the international growth strategy. The company’s watchword is to diversify the business, using as support the regional platforms where the group is already present, contrary to the climate of recession affecting the Portuguese economy. In this context, the group is preparing to enter the bidding competition that the Government of Luanda is finalising in the hydroelectric area. “We are going to participate in the concession of small hydro plants, in partnership with the Vista group, linked to Banco Privado Atlântico,” says Jorge Coelho, CEO of Mota-Engil, to the newspaper Diário Económico. However, these undertakings are not the only ones in the plans of the Portuguese company. “Through Mota-Engil Engenharia e Construção, we are interested in large dams. However, unlike the small hydro plants, we do not intend to act as operators. Only in their construction,” stresses the manager. Angola prepares to give priority to hydropower production, under the public investment programme set for the next six years, thus seeking to enhance their lossmaking power-generating plants.”

Luís Abrantes n. Innovation, Creativity and Knowledge

15 June 2011 No Comment

We could talk about his training in Mechanical Handling, his professional experience or the exemplary way he leads a team. However, what really stand out in Luís Abrantes are his efficient gadgets and his enjoyment in searching for solutions in technical manuals, in order to repair machinery failures.  At 41, this workshop supervisor of Mota-Engil Engenharia appears as a simple man but with a thirst for knowledge so clear that it rubs off on anyone who talks to him. Some of his inventions, which are practical and very cheap, since he reuses spare parts of other machines in order to build new ones, are certified and there’s even a brand that has already copied one of its devices. “The machine that loosens hydraulic jacks has fascinated the Caterpillar operators who came to the site. After using it a few times, they asked me if they could copy it.” He offered his idea for free, since his motto is to learn and share knowledge. The generators testing unit is probably one of the most important equipment he ever created within Mota-Engil. “Like all inventions, this machine also emerged from a need. We have a fleet of generators that we rent for works and actually the machines that came out from here were working correctly and soon after they broke down at work for some reason. We had to find a way to send equipment and forget them, or else we wouldn’t do anything but to repair the generators. So I decided to find a way to test the generators, which I achieved through a practical and inexpensive invention. With this unit we could generate an output protocol, which means that we know how this machine leaves the Porto Alto site because everything is verified and recorded in detail, therefore, if it fails it is because it is not being used properly. Moreover, when the machine comes back into the Porto Alto site, we obtain its usage history and, if the equipment has lost some ability, we know where to act so as to restore the machine’s full activity. “There is a spark in his eyes when he talks about his work that rubs off on other people and makes them want to know more about his ideas put into practice. This also enables Mota-Engil to avoid having always recourse to maintenance done by the equipment brands. Luís Abrantes is always looking for knowing more and better, which cannot be obtained only through the many manuals he reads. “When I came to Mota-Engil, I brought some knowledge and even now I still cannot stop studying. I’m addicted. I also have my team and I am proud to have achieved the respect of all those who work under my guidance. I highly value my staff and I usually say that it is the staff that makes a good boss. We may have a broad knowledge, but we are nothing without our team and the background. We can’t respond alone.” Luís believes that it is essential to learn with the fellow colleagues. As a leader, he says he never raised his voice and, despite all his responsibilities, he claims that he is a colleague because “if needed, I’ll do the same as they do, I don’t confine myself to commanding.” The mobile phone is a central tool, since the team is many times at work explaining what is going on with a machine while Luís is at the Porto Alto site looking for the possible cause of the failure in the manuals. “Making a diagnosis yet on paper is what I try to do so the next step is only to identify the part and to fix it. We should not handle anything without knowing what we are doing. It is usually a simple breakdown, so making a root and branch diagnosis may solve most of the problem.”  We could almost write a book about Luís Abrantes, whose disorganised desk does not reflect at all the determined and focused person he is. However, his life goals are quite simple: to continue learning, teaching, repairing failures (preferably very complicated ones) and of course creating new machines!

PORTUGAL: Sustainable technology applied in Metrópolis and Torre Ocidente

1 June 2011 No Comment

In the issue of this month devoted to Trends & Efficiencies, where sustainability is an integral part, the ImobiliárioOJE magazine refers to two projects that bears the imprint of Mota-Engil Engenharia: Project Metrópolis and Torre Ocidente. In the first case, where the company is in charge of the structure, deep foundations and topometry, ecologically clean and certified coating materials will be used, as well as energy sustainable construction systems, namely: integration of large shade panels so as to reduce sun exposure of the south-facing façades and to minimise the energy cost of the building; use of low consumption and automated control lighting systems; construction of façades with ventilated systems in order to optimise the thermal performance of the interior; and use of high performance and low power consumption HVAC systems. The Torre Ocidente, which is in turn one of the most recent references with regard to the optimisation of resources and the reduction of energy consumption, uses the most advanced technology, thus contributing to a more sustainable environment. Among the main technical solutions are the double glazing façades with low emission external tempered glass, with a low 0.23 sun factor and a 1.6 U-coefficient. The lighting was not forgotten, since the use of T5 fluorescent lamps with electronic ballasts, equipped with prismatic diffuser, allows a greater light dispersion, making it suitable for the use of computers since it reduces glare. The range of technological resources is immense, and even water saving hasn’t been forgotten. The reduction in water consumption reaches about 4.9 million litres per year through the result of the use of automatic managing and flow controlling tabs, as well as dual flush system.

PORTUGAL: Along the Tua River and railway

1 June 2011 No Comment

On the 14th of this month, the employees of the Douro Interior Concession, Lot 6, went on a trek from Brunheda to Foz do Tua (mouth of Tua River). It’s a long time since employees Jorge Carvalho and Abílio Teixeira have been developing this idea that has now been put into practice. “This initiative was initially intended only to the employees of this work and would be a walk among friends, but it quickly expanded to other colleagues within the company, because I have always advocated that putting colleagues from various areas in life-sharing activities should be carried out , so that anyone who integrates this five days per week “family” knows each other personally”, said Jorge Carvalho. The hiking initiative has linked Brunheda’s railway station and Foz do Tua, a distance of about 21 km, via Tralhão, São Lourenço, Santa Luzia, Castanheiro and Tralhariz, including so the municipalities of Alijó (departure and return), Carrazeda de Ansiães (all the way) and S. João da Pesqueira (Foz Tua). Winding paths, ending in a walk over the track ballast, and crossing the Tua railway: that’s what some 30 participants, composed of employees of Mota-Engil Engenharia and their family, have found there. “We knew that, with the start scheduled for seven a.m. in Alijó, it would be an extra effort that could limit the adherence, but all those who have expressed their wish to participate have improvised means to be here the day before and everyone appeared on time, even knowing that the route was rated of medium/high difficulty,” said Jorge Carvalho. All then began to hike, despite the difficulty of the track and the heat still to come. But the good-fellowship and the spirit of adventure emboldened to end this wonderful and walking journey, even for those who experienced this type of event for the first time. “It was a big challenge because this was my first hiking experience and the track was very ambitious: the distance itself, the type of floor, the climate and also the unexpected events that occurred, such as allergies to flowers and plants of that region. But the most important thing was to have overcome all obstacles and to have reached the end with the mission accomplished feeling,” said Paula Maria, one of the participants. Actually, the nature, fauna and flora of the region were factors that leave no one unaffected. For Célia Caipira, who is accustomed to other kinds of hiking, it was not so difficult to overcome the difficulties. She’d rather refer to “the contact with nature” as a determining factor that lingered in her mind, besides the interaction between everyone. “The rail line crosses a magnificent valley of dream landscapes almost unreal, always escorted by the waters of the Tua River, and the quiet and beauty are absolutely indescribable,” she added. The hike had the support of the city councils of Alijó and Carrazeda de Ansiães for the transportation of the participants from the work site to the start of the walk and the return, as well as the distribution of tourist brochures. It ended around 2 o’clock p.m. and was followed by a lunch among everyone, where souvenirs were given and “the bonds of friendship and fellowship among all” were strengthened. The goal was achieved, according to Jorge Carvalho, who confided that “there were already a few challenges to repeat similar initiatives, and even the wish to create a department of Mota-Engil Engenharia employees designed for organising such events.” Given the positive feedback of everyone, we expect more initiatives of this kind, as the organisation tried in this case to provide an activity with reduced costs, where the social relations justify all the sacrifices. And the goals were largely achieved. Let’s hike again!

PORTUGAL: Douro Interior – Lot 7: Changing Launching Beam between V2 and V1 viaducts

15 May 2011 No Comment

The route between the Viaduct 2 (V2) and the Viaduct 1 (V1) of the IC5 road section (between Pombal road junction and IP2), a part of Lot 7 in the Douro Interior concession was completed successfully. The Launching Beam (LB) used 34 supports, progressing 62 m per day, according to plan. The success in this operation was due to the close cooperation and involvement of employees of the production team at the worksite, the equipment direction and the technical bureau. For the construction of the decks of both viaducts, the building process foreseen was using a movable scaffolding system. In this way, the MORREIRA LB (PERI) was used. Given the time available, and in accordance with the general planning of the work, once the V2 decks were constructed, there was the need to move, by its own means, the LB to V1 along the platform of the track in a length of 1428 m. The choice of this methodology, rather than a traditional solution of disassembling, resulted in a deadline reduction of about one month, with obvious advantages in optimising existing resources at work and in anticipating the availability of equipment for future use.

José Tabacão n. multi-skilled, committed

15 May 2011 No Comment

This might be a synonym for José Tabacão in any Portuguese dictionary. Those who deal closely with this 53 year old employee say that he employs commitment and dedication to its daily work in a remarkable and multi-skilled versatility. He is working at Mota-Engil Engenharia for 37 years, 20 of which as Foreman. “I started to work at 15 as formwork carpenter’s apprentice. One year later, I was already working as blacksmith’s apprentice. Then I worked continuously as 2nd Mason and 1st Mason until I completed the Foremen course”, explained José Tabacão, as the conversation flowed and the memories clearly arose. “The latest works of main activity that I made were the Stock Exchange and the Airport Cateringpor, both in Lisbon,” he recalls. For this employee of the Warranty Assistance Department, the difficulty of this type of works involves their entire requirement, “the pathologies that are submitted by customers and that require a lot of work, often under adverse conditions, with great pressure from the Client.” José Tabacão has done a bit of everything in the company, even Electrician, Driver/Operator and Welder. In the latter case, there have been some situations that required an immediate and effective solution. He has been working in works in warranty for 17 years and has no doubt that, “despite the problems have been declining, there is still much work that could and should be improved”, he added, pointing out the possible causes. “In some cases it may be the lack of care, but there are also situations where the rush to do well and quickly, due to the short time-limits for completion of some works, is the enemy of success.” Anomalies in Carpentry, Cracks, Leaks and Anomalies in Water Networks, Sanitation and Heating are some of the most frequent pathologies that the team to which he belongs has faced in the daily tasks. However, “there is nothing that cannot be solved with commitment, professionalism and experience, even when the problem is difficult to detect.” There is also the flip side, that is to say claims are not always under the responsibility of the Warranty, since the maintenance of the works should be respected by the client so that many of the pathologies would be avoided. In the mean time, for more sensitive customers, “I try to demonstrate that they can rely on our work, thus softening any source of tension that could be generated.” The result of our work can be found in the customer satisfaction, which reflects our professionalism and the way we deal with each problem, each pathology, “he concluded, before getting ready for another situation that needs to be addressed. Through all his history and dedication to the company, José Tabacão has not renounced to Education: after completing the ninth year in the “New Opportunities” programme, he is now attending the twelfth year. We may then add another characteristic in order to define this man: enterprising mind.

Fórum Sintra: an elegant and culturally integrated area

28 April 2011 No Comment

Sintra Forum, or Fórum Sintra from its original designation, is open to the public since the 11th of this month. At the official inauguration of this commercial complex of excellence, elegant and culturally integrated, attended Fernando Seara, Mayor of Sintra, developers and project managers, as well as elements of the Production Direction of Mota-Engil Engenharia, among others. The connection with the IC19 road or with the hills of the Serra de Sintra, crowned by the Pena Palace, has led to an architecture that seeks to reconcile, in a contemporary invention, such distinct developments in time and space. According to Fernando Seara, “the Fórum Sintra is a single area for opportunities and a significant investment in a unique moment in the life of Portugal.” However, for the representatives of Mota-Engil Engenharia, the size of the work is highly relevant and distinguishes, again, the brand Mota-Engil. This shopping centre has a construction area of 119 thousand m2 and was built by the consortium composed in equal parts (50%) by Mota-Engil Engenharia and Opway. It is the first major infrastructure of this kind in the municipality. The value of contracts amounted to 34 million euros, including containment, excavation and structure, finishing and landscape. The architectural concept and execution of the Fórum Sintra are the responsibility of ARX and Chapman Taylor, respectively. With an investment of 170 million euros resulting from the expansion and refurbishment of the former Feira Nova de Sintra, promoters provide about 3300 jobs. The Fórum Sintra has 182 stores on three floors, including a Pingo Doce hypermarket, a food court with 20 restaurants and also seven cinemas Castello Lopes. We may read on the newspaper that “the largest Portuguese companies have already billed in the last year about half the turnover out of the country, according to the 2010 reports and accounts recently disclosed. In the next years, before the increasing financing difficulties and the recession of the Portuguese economy, this trend is expected to be amplified.”

Planting a native specimen (olive-tree), which may be found along the road and was identified for being cut, was a landmark of the initiative. The project will last two years, until the task is completed. In this sense, the Ambiente _ Douro Interior environment project intends to achieve the following objectives: promote the sustainable management of timber, resulting from the process of deforestation; promote a reduction in the treated waste, resulting from the urban construction site; and raising awareness among employees to the cycle of waste management, including: Waste generation / Recovery / Use as raw material. In the mean time, the project has already validated the reuse of logs (tree logs) in the dumps and the green matter in the black soils, the reduction of the Urban Similar Waste production (since collecting Urban Solid Waste in the north-east area costs 292 euros per container/month), and has promoted a positive image of Mota-Engil Engenharia before the Client, in the local community and among environmental entities. Once the Production has shown that the best choice would be to perform deforestation together with shaping operations and to bring tree logs to the dumps, the project Ambiente_Douro Interior has analysed the environmental benefits/implications of this activity and has concluded that this action could be framed in an Organic Recovery rather than in an energy recovery, thus respecting ancient agricultural practices. This solution provides technical added value, since it improves the efficiency of deforestation/shaping/earthworks operations, both for Environment and for Production. With the validation of the reuse of logs in the dumps and the green matter in the black soils, it is possible to improve the environmental process, by promoting the organic reuse of green matter and the productive process of deforestation/shaping, since performing these activities in a whole provides a better work management and optimises resources such as equipment, labour force and, essentially, time.

Mota-Engil creates a urban and industrial waste company in Mozambique

14 April 2011 No Comment

“Jorge Coelho has informed (…) that Mota-Engil is going to set up a new company in Mozambique for collection and treatment of urban and industrial waste. The announcement of the CEO was made in the Business Roundtable devoted to Mozambique and promoted by the newspaper Negócios.  Jorge Coelho pointed out that Mozambique is “one of the markets that stood out in his company”. As an example, Mota-Engil has already built and rehabilitated 1561 km of roads in that country. He also said that “the growth potential is far away from becoming exhausted”. From the current activity performed in Mozambique, Jorge Coelho stressed the construction of the All Africa Games Village, which will occur this year in Maputo. This work will be completed in less than one year and it is a “challenge” issued by the Mozambican President of the Republic, Armando Guebuza.”

Mota-Engil intends to sell real estate assets in Portugal

14 April 2011 No Comment

“Jorge Coelho, CEO of Mota-Engil, said (…) that the group intends to sell real estate assets owned in Portugal. “We will sell anything that is not central for the group”, he said while presenting Mota-Engil 2010 results. It concerns about 200 assets, such as former construction sites, “some of them worth little” he said, without detailing the value expected by the company with this sale. However, the CEO of the group stressed that Mota-Engil “has no pressure in selling” these assets. Jorge Coelho might also consider that the group could share the ownership of the companies fully owned, but keeping them under control. However, it is something “possible” but not “under consideration”. About the group’s activity in Spain, Jorge Coelho said that Mota-Engil has a solution being examined for the company owned in that country. “This is a small company, with a turnover of 10 million euros, with no development capacity and no market. I don’t know if it will be sold or if another solution will be found”. The CEO also said that, in the scope of the current economic situation, the group has revised all the contracts. “There is no contract within the Mota-Engil Group that has not been revised”, said Jorge Coelho, adding that the group hasn’t dismissed employees.”

New Coach Museum – Architecture of Excellence in Lisbon

14 April 2011 No Comment

This 12.75 million euros contract is the responsibility of the consortium formed by Mota-Engil Engenharia, leader and in charge of the foundations and reinforced concrete structure, and by Martifer Construções, in charge of the metallic structure. This is the very end of this contract phase. The New Coach Museum, in Belém, Lisbon, is now emerging and should be an architectural landmark for the Portuguese capital, according to the wish of the client: Sociedade Frente Tejo. People who drive there or wait at the train station cannot remain indifferent to a main building settled on 4.5 m high pillars: one of the uncommon aspects of this task. “The concept of the architecture designer was really to have a museum almost completely suspended. Part of the ground floor  will be open to the public as an extension of the adjacent squares and public spaces. That gives rise to large spaces and structures that appear to be heavy, but are actually lightweight”, said Bernardo Salavessa, Project Manager. There is a second building, smaller but including a floor for the Museum administration and a restaurant, also raised, and an auditorium at the ground floor with a reflecting pool. Both structures will be connected by a bridge made of glass that will provide a privileged view of the rich heritage of the site, surrounded by Jerónimos, Belém Palace, Cultural Centre of Belém and the river Tagus.  Both buildings reach the river through an elevated passage for pedestrians and bicycles (to be built in the future), but there was the need to overcome some difficulties for this purpose. “The link between the reinforced concrete and the metallic structures were the main setbacks, as well as some overlaps. The metallic structure represents a large weight on this contract and there was a need of assembling most of the elements at the work site. Large parts were also raised by a 700 ton crane, so important means have been involved in this construction”, said Bernardo Salavessa. When we visited the work, the concreting operation of the floor slab of the Museum had already begun, according to the wish of the designer who intended to have a continuous concreting with no joints. “Work began at 4 a.m. and continued throughout the day because it’s a continuous process. The slab that is now being made in concrete will be the final finishing of the Museum floor. Despite being a foundations and structure project, several tasks of final finishing are here included – a lot of concrete in sight, the slab is over! We can already see the final aspect of the building in some areas”, said Salavessa, adding that Mota-Engil Engenharia is well placed for guaranteeing the Finishing phase. Meanwhile, at the work front-line stands Eduardo Monteiro, Head Foreman for 25 years at Mota-Engil. Eduardo Monteiro has experience and skills in managing employees having different nationalities and personalities and says that “work is going on with a natural adaptation of the people while achieving the best attitude to deal with each worker. In daily situations, there is sometimes the need to improvise at the site and everything has been solved by now”. As this work is structurally complex, due to its volume and to the storage space and materials handling, the Foreman also says that “we have to make efforts to ensure that the process occurs in the best possible way and that work proceeds without problems”.
We are waiting to start the finishing phase!

The highest point in Mexico flies the flag of Mota-Engil

31 March 2011 No Comment

Ricardo Almeida, co-director of the administrative and financial department of CAPEXA – Constructora Autopista Perote Xalapa, reached the summit of the Orizaba Volcano, the third highest peak on the North American continent, on the 6th of March at 09:40 local time. In a mixture of emotions ranging from adrenaline to joy at the achievement of climbing such a high mountain, Ricardo displayed Mota-Engil’s flag to convey the Group’s ambition in Mexico. The ascension took eight hours and forty minutes, with the climb down taking four and a half hours, all with the help of Alfredo Lefozy, the guide who proved indispensable throughout the climb. A heavy backpack and necessary equipment wasn’t all Ricardo carried with him to the summit. The economist felt the weight of hours of training and adaptation to climate and conditions, but was spurred on by the encouragement of his colleagues at Mota-Engil Engineering and from Isolux-Corsan, who also participate in the consortium.  Ricardo revealed that carrying Mota-Engil’s flag was part of his plan from day one, the company playing such an important part in his life, and that this climbing taught him to value the environment even more. “I’ll never forget the beauty of the first rays of sun falling upon a glacier at 5000 metres! It is a treasure we have to help preserve as we’ll never be able to recreate it. At a personal level this experience translates into enrichment and valorisation of everything that is dear to us. It’s also a renewal of the power of believing that we are actually able to overcome our limitations.”

1st section of Pisão-Beja Pipeline scheduled for July

31 March 2011 No Comment

The first section of the Pisão-Beja pipeline, included in the Project of Multiple Purposes of Alqueva, is planned to be completed by July of this year. Work on the Primary Irrigation System, beginning in July of 2010, will enable the supply of water to the western area of Beja, as well as to Cabeceiras do Roxo, thus feeding about 11,000 ha of irrigated farmland. With the collection of water at the Alvito/Pisão Channel, the pipeline will supply the Álamo Water Tank through a gravity pipe with a total extension of 3100 m. A pumping station shall also be installed near the reservoir, made up by six electro-pump groups, with the capacity to pump a flow of 7460 l/sec up to 46 m, up to the Beringel reservoir. However, we were surprised by its strong historical component: with the initial cleaning and weeding of the site, several archaeological and ethnographical occurrences were identified, and it was concluded that the reservoir and pumping station areas were highly sensitive. With a geographic location favouring settlement thanks to water resources and mild relief, as well as its closeness to the Roman settlement of Beja (Pax Iulia), the area has seen consistent human occupation spanning from prehistoric times until the present day.

Mota-Engil plans to invest 125 million euros

14 March 2011 No Comment

“Mota-Engil will increasingly come to stake internationally on the port business, especially in Peru. Further to the concession of the port of Paita, in 2009, in the north of this country in South America, the Portuguese construction group plans now to enter a bid for a second tender concerning the concession of a river port in the Amazon forest. Eduardo Pimentel, chairman of Liscont (a company of the Mota-Engil Group in charge of port concessions), said to the newspaper Diário Económico that the invitation to tender concerns the river port of Yurimaguas, in Peruvian Amazonia, and is already underway. Tenders shall be submitted until the end of the first half of this year. According to Paulo Moutinho Neves, Liscont’s manager in charge of the operations in Peru, the investment planned in the port of Yurimaguas reaches 40 million dollars (about 29 million euros) over the concession period. As with the port of Paita, the concession lasts 30 years and Mota-Engil has joined Grupo Cosmos, the second largest Peruvian port operator, in an equal share partnership.”

Government proceeds with expropriation for Pinhal Interior road section

13 March 2011 No Comment

According to an order published in the Official Journal of the Portuguese Republic, the government has requested compulsory purchase in the public interest, as a matter of urgency, for the construction of the road section IC3 Tomar – Avelar Sul, a part of the Pinhal Interior road concession. This 520 km-long concession represents an overall investment of 1244 million euros. The main axes are IC3, linking Tomar to Coimbra, and IC8, between Pombal (A17/A1 motorways) and Vila Velha de Ródão (A23). (…) The government also empowers Ascendi, a concessionaire that stems from a partnership between Mota-Engil and Grupo Espírito Santo, “as a sub-concessionaire of the Pinhal Interior sub-concession, to take the administrative ownership” of the parcels to expropriate, “in order to promptly start working, since it is a public interest that the compulsory purchase is urgent and that the project is carried out as soon as possible”. The order also refers that charges will be ensured by Ascendi Pinhal Interior. In early 2010, the Pinhal Interior road concession has been awarded to Ascendi Pinhal Interior by means of an open tender procedure. Ascendi Pinhal Interior will be responsible for the design, project, financing, exploitation and maintenance of the concession for 30 years.
